O ομογενής συγγραφέας, Χάρης Νικολαΐδης - ο οποίος είχε φυλακιστεί στην Ταϊλάνδη για προσβολή της βασιλικής οικογένειας - διέψευσε τους ισχυρισμούς ότι η δυσφήμιση του πρίγκιπα ήταν "εσκεμμένη" για να γίνει γνωστός ως συγγραφέας!

Αέρα ελευθερίας αναπνέει από το Σάββατο ο Χάρης Νικολαΐδης, ο οποίος εκρατείτο για έξι μήνες σε φυλακές - κάτεργα της Ταϊλάνδης.

Λίγο μετά την αποφυλάκισή του όμως και την άμεση απέλασή του στην Αυστραλία, ο Νικολαΐδης δέχθηκε το "κατηγορώ" ενός πρώην συναδέλφου του στην Ταϊλάνδη.

Ο Χιθ Ντόλαρ κατηγόρησε τον ομογενή συγγραφέα ότι, ενώ γνώριζε το νόμο της Ταϊλάνδης περί προσβολής της βασιλικής οικογένειας, εντούτοις, στο βιβλίο του "Αληθοφάνεια", συμπεριέλαβε την επίμαχη παράγραφο για το διάδοχο του χρόνου της Ταϊλάνδης.

"Πριν κυκλοφορήσει το βιβλίο, ο Χάρης έλεγε ότι αν πάει στη φυλακή για προσβολή της βασιλικής οικογένειας, τότε θα γίνει γνωστός και ως συγγραφέας".

Ο Νικολαΐδης τα διαψεύδει όλα αυτά και υποστηρίζει ότι δεν συμπεριέλαβε την επίμαχη παράγραφό στο βιβλίο του μόνο για να προκαλέσει σάλο.

"Ο Χάρης συζητούσε μαζί μου για το βιβλίο και ήταν της άποψης ότι ένας συγγραφέας για να γίνει γνωστός πρέπει να προκαλέσει", είπε ο κ. Ντόλαρ.

Πρόσθεσε, μάλιστα, ότι μια φορά ο Νικολαΐδης έδειξε στον ίδιο και σε άλλους συναδέλφους του κάποια χειρόγραφά του που έθιγαν τον πρίγκιπα.

"Του είπαμε ότι θα μπει σε περιπέτειες, αλλά δεν μας άκουσε", είπε ο κ. Ντόλαρ.

"Δεν θυμάμαι να του έδειξα χειρόγραφα. Το βέβαιο είναι ότι ούτε που μπορούσα να φανταστώ ότι θα μου ασκούσαν δίωξη", απάντησε ο ομογενής.

Σύμφωνα με τον Νικολαΐδη, ο κ. Ντόλαρ προσπαθεί να γίνει ο ίδιος γνωστός με το να δυσφημεί τον ομογενή συγγραφέα.

"Γράφει ένα βιβλίο και επιδιώκει δημοσιότητα. Με θίγει αφάνταστα με όσα λέει. Έζησα έναν εφιάλτη", λέει ο Νικολαΐδης.

Ο Ντόλαρ, με την σειρά του, κατηγορεί τον ομογενή ως "καιροσκόπο, που έθεσε σε κίνδυνο τις σχέσεις δυο χωρών, μόνο και μόνο για προσωπικό κέρδος".

"Οι δηλώσεις του Ντόλαρ δεν έχουν καμιά αξιοπιστία" δήλωσε ο δικηγόρος του Νικολαΐδη, Μαρκ Ντιν.

Στο μεταξύ, ο Νικολαΐδης, που απολαμβάνει πλέον την ελευθερία του, έκανε γνωστό ότι θα γράψει βιβλίο για τις εμπειρίες του αλλά μόλις είναι έτοιμος και του περάσει ο "μεγάλος θυμός".

Κατασυγκινημένος, ο Νικολαΐδης επανενώθηκε Το Σάββατο με την οικογένειά του και την άρρωστη μητέρα του.

Τα δάκρυα χαράς, όμως, για την απελευθέρωση και την επιστροφή του Χάρη, έγιναν ένα με τα δάκρυα της λύπης, καθώς προτού πάει στο σπίτι, έπρεπε να κάνει μια στάση στο νοσοκομείο όπου νοσηλεύεται η μητέρα του, η οποία υπέστη εγκεφαλικό, όπως υποστηρίζει ο ίδιος από τη στεναχώρια της για εκείνον...

Φανερά συγκινημένος, ο Χάρης από την κατάσταση της μητέρας του δήλωσε για την ημέρα της επιστροφής του. "Θα ήταν η καλύτερη μέρα της ζωής μου, αλλά είναι άρρωστη η μάνα μου στο νοσοκομείο και δεν μιλά... Είχα τόσα να της πω και ήθελε να μου πει τόσα...".

Ο εφιάλτης της Ταϊλάνδης τέλειωσε... ωστόσο, όπως ο ίδιος παραδέχεται, τα όσα έζησε θα τον στοιχειώνουν για μια ζωή! "Δεν μπορούσα ποτέ να φανταστώ ότι υπάρχει έτσι τόπος και έτσι άνθρωποι! Ήταν σαν ζωολογικός κήπος, σαν ζώα, όχι άνθρωποι! Μόνο με προσευχή άντεξα: Ευχαριστώ τον Ελληνισμό που με βοήθησε...".

Στο μεταξύ, στην ιστοσελίδα του Αυστραλού υπουργού Εξωτερικών βρίσκεται ανακοίνωση τύπου που αφορά στην απελευθέρωση του Χ. Νικολαΐδη, έπειτα από απονομή χάριτος που του δόθηκε από τον βασιλιά της χώρας.

Στην ανακοίνωση Τύπου σημειώνεται η παροχή προξενικής βοήθειας στον Χ. Νικολαΐδη από την στιγμή της κράτησης του στις 31 Αυγούστου 2008 έως την επιστροφή του στην Αυστραλία και οι προσωπικές νύξεις του Αυστραλού υπουργού Εξωτερικών σε αρμοδίους Ταϊλανδούς αξιωματούχους. Ένας από τους λόγους απονομής χάριτος είναι οι καλές σχέσεις μεταξύ Αυστραλίας και Ταϊλάνδης αναφέρεται.

Ο κ. Σμιθ ευχαριστεί τον πρέσβη της Αυστραλίας στην Ταϊλάνδη και το προσωπικό της εκεί αποστολής, το σύνολο των βουλευτών της ομοσπονδιακής Βουλής στην Αυστραλία και τις αρχές της Ταϊλάνδης, ενώ τονίζει τις περιορισμένες δυνατότητες παρέμβασης που έχει κάθε διπλωματική αποστολή σε περίπτωση που υπήκοοι της χώρας που εκπροσωπεί βρεθούν υπόδικοι σε ποινικές υποθέσεις, υπενθυμίζοντας ότι η διακριτική παρέμβαση ενδέχεται να βοηθήσει στην τελική καλύτερη μεταχείριση του υποδίκου. Δικαιολογεί τη μέχρι τώρα στάση της αυστραλιανής Κυβέρνησης, υπογραμμίζοντας ότι κάθε χώρα έχει το δικό της σύστημα απονομής δικαιοσύνης που οφείλει να γίνεται σεβαστό από τις άλλες και ότι κάθε Αυστραλός υπήκοος που ταξιδεύει στο εξωτερικό οφείλει να γνωρίζει και να σέβεται τους νόμους της χώρας που αποτελεί τον προορισμό του, κατά αντιστοιχία με κάθε ξένο υπήκοο που επισκέπτεται την Αυστραλία. Διαφορετικά, όταν αντιλαμβάνεται τους νόμους άλλου κράτους ως ασαφείς, λανθασμένους και δεν σκοπεύει να συνετιστεί με αυτούς, δεν θα πρέπει να ταξιδεύει εκεί. Με αυτό το σκεπτικό παροτρύνει τους Αυστραλούς να ενημερώνονται για τις ταξιδιωτικές οδηγίες που εκδίδει το αυστραλιανό υπουργείο Εξωτερικών και να ενημερώνουν το ΥΠΕΞ για το πού βρίσκονται στο εξωτερικό, μέσω του συστήματος εγγραφής που διαθέτει.

Παράλληλα, η εφημερίδα "The Sydney Morning Herald" φιλοξενεί άρθρο στο οποίο υποστηρίζεται ότι "οι Αυστραλοί ταξιδιώτες που αντιμετωπίζουν προβλήματα στο εξωτερικό, διακινδυνεύουν με τις απαιτήσεις τους τη μετατροπή του διπλωματικού σώματος σε σύστημα κοινωνικής ασφάλισης με μέριμνά του τους Αυστραλούς πολίτες στο εξωτερικό". Παρατίθεται σχετική έρευνα του Ινστιτούτου Lowy, σύμφωνα με την οποία, "τα περιστατικά προξενικής αρωγής σε Αυστραλούς πολίτες στο εξωτερικό έχουν αυξηθεί ραγδαία από το 1997 έως το 2008. Το γεγονός μειώνει τη δυνατότητα απασχόλησης των διπλωματών στα παραδοσιακά τους καθήκοντα, δηλαδή την ανάπτυξη επαφών και τη διεκδίκηση μακροπρόθεσμων πολιτικών στόχων, επιβαρύνει τον προϋπολογισμό των διπλωματικών αρχών που λειτουργούν με μειωμένο προσωπικό, ενθαρρύνοντας ταυτόχρονα παράλογες απαιτήσεις από πλευράς πολιτών".

GILES UNGPAKORN: British professor flees Thailand after charge of insulting king - THE GUARDIAN

A leading Bangkok-based professor who has joint British and Thai nationality fled Thailand at the weekend in the face of a lengthy sentence under the country's draconian lese-majesty laws, which forbid criticism of the king.

He is the latest person to face prosecution under the laws, seen as an attempt by the government to stifle dissent.

Giles Ji Ungpakorn, 54, arrived in England at the weekend after being charged under the laws. He had been due to present himself to the police in Bangkok today and could have faced 15 years in jail if found guilty.

"I did not believe I would receive a fair trial," said Ungpakorn, an associate professor of political science at Chulalongkom University and a contributor to the New Statesman and Asian Sentinel."

Ungpakorn, who has an English mother and son, and who studied at Sussex and Durham universities and the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, is the author of A Coup for the Rich, in which he criticises the 2006 military coup.

He said that the charges arose out of eight paragraphs in the first chapter deemed insulting to King Bhumibol. He claimed that the director of a university bookshop stocking his book had informed the special branch that it "insulted the monarchy". The offending paragraphs deal with incidents around the coup.

"It is clear that the charge is really about preventing any discussion about the relationship between the military junta and the monarchy," Ungpakorn said. "This is in order to protect the military's sole claim to legitimacy: that it acted in the interests of the monarchy."

He said a website had been set up so people could inform on anyone alleged to have violated the law. "There is a climate of fear," he said.

The English chapter of PEN, the international writers' organisation, has written to Bill Rammell, the Foreign Office minister who is due to visit Thailand, urging him to make representations to the Thai government.

Carole Seymour-Jones of PEN said: "We remain deeply concerned by the increased use of lese-majesty laws in Thailand. Giles is the second New Statesman contributor to have faced such charges in recent months, the first being the Australian writer Harry Nicolaides, sentenced to three years in prison on 19 January."

Academics from the UK, India, South Africa, Turkey, France, Greece, Poland, Canada, Australia and other countries have also protested. A group, including Professor Alex Callinicos, Susan George and Dennis Brutus have signed a petition expressing "deep concern". In a letter to the Guardian recently, more than 30 academics urged that charges be dropped.

Σοβαρό εγκεφαλικό επεισόδιο υπέστη τις προάλλες η μητέρα του Ελληνοαυστραλού Χάρη Νικολαΐδη. Δεν μπόρεσε να αντέξει τον καημό του Χάρη, που εκτίει τριετή ποινή φυλάκισης στα μεσαιωνικά μπουντρούμια της Ταϊλάνδης για το... τίποτα!

Ο Θεός να βοηθήσει κι αυτήν και τον Χάρη.

Στο μεταξύ οι φωνές διαμαρτυρίας ολοένα και πληθαίνουν στην Ταϊλάνδη, όσον αφορά τον απαρχαιωμένο και σκληρό νόμο για τη δυσφήμιση της Μοναρχίας (lèse majesté), βάσει του οποίου έχουν καταδικαστεί διάφοροι διανοούμενοι και δημοσιογράφοι, μεταξύ των οποίων και ο Νικολαΐδης.

Συγκεκριμένα, τον περασμένο Νοέμβριο συνελήφθη ο 76χρονος ακαδημαϊκός Σουλάκ Σιβαράσκα, εξ αιτίας μιας ομιλίας του στο Πανεπιστήμιο, όπου έθιγε τα κακώς κείμενα, ενώ πρόσφατα παραπέμφθηκε σε δίκη ο επίσης ακαδημαϊκός Τζίλες Ούνγκπακορν, κατάφερε όμως και διέφυγε στη Βρετανία στις 9 Φεβρουαρίου.

Ο Ούνγκπακορν, που έχει διπλή υπηκοότητα, αφού η μητέρα του ήταν Αγγλίδα, διώκεται για το βιβλίο του "Ένα πραξικόπημα για τους πλούσιους - Η πολιτική κρίση της Ταϊλάνδης", στο οποίο επικρίνει το στρατιωτικό πραξικόπημα του 2006. Το Πανεπιστήμιο λογόκρινε βέβαια το βιβλίο του κι έτσι το εξέδωσε μόνος του.

Μόλις εγκατέλειψε την Ταϊλάνδη και πάτησε το πόδι του στη Βρετανία ωστόσο, ο 54χρονος καθηγητής, ανέβασε στο διαδίκτυο ένα Μανιφέστο με τον τίτλο "Κόκκινο Σιάμ", που κυκλοφορεί ήδη σε όλο τον κόσμο, ξεσηκώνοντας τους συμπατριώτες του όχι μόνο εναντίον του "lèse majeté", αλλά καλώντας τους σε επανάσταση. Σε μια χώρα που ο λαός λατρεύει τον βασιλιά σαν Θεό, καταλαβαίνει κανείς πόσο δύσκολες μπορεί να είναι οι προσπάθειες για αφύπνιση. Τα φωτεινά μυαλά όμως, όσο λιγοστά κι αν είναι στην αρχή, είναι αυτά που ξεκινούν τις ρηξικέλευθες αλλαγές της Ιστορίας.

Ας σημειωθεί εδώ ότι ο περιβόητος νόμος, που έχει τις ρίζες του στο απολυταρχικό καθεστώς της Γαλλίας των Λουδοβίκων, εφαρμόζεται στη χώρα από το 1956.

Γράφει, μεταξύ άλλων, ο Ούνγκπακορν στο "Μανιφέστο του Κόκκινου Σιάμ":
"Την ώρα που οι ηγέτες του κόσμου, όπως ο Αμερικανός πρόεδρος Ομπάμα, παλεύουν να δώσουν λύση στην οικονομική κρίση, η κυβέρνηση του Δημοκρατικού Κόμματος της Ταϊλάνδης αφήνει χιλιάδες εργάτες άνεργους. Η μόνη έννοια της κυβέρνησης είναι να συντρίψει κάθε φωνή διαμαρτυρίας με τον νόμο lèse majesté. Έχει μάλιστα δημιουργήσει και μία ιστοσελίδα όπου ο ένας πολίτης μπορεί να καταδίδει τον άλλον! Στρατός έχει σταλεί σε διάφορες κοινότητες και χωριά προκειμένου να επιβάλλει την τάξη".

Συνεχίζοντας κι ενώ καθοδηγεί τον λαό σε εξέγερση, ο ακαδημαϊκός γράφει: "Κατά τη διάρκεια της Γαλλικής Επανάστασης το μπλε, το άσπρο και το κόκκινο, [σ.σ. τα χρώματα της σημαίας της Ταϊλάνδης], αντιπροσώπευαν το σύνθημα: "Ελευθερία, Ισότητα, Αδελφότητα". Αυτό είναι το σύνθημα που πρέπει να χρησιμοποιήσουμε κι εμείς...
Τα όπλα μας θα είναι μαζικές διαδηλώσεις, απεργίες και διάδοση των ιδεών μας σε όλα τα κοινωνικά στρώματα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των κατώτερων τάξεων του στρατού".

Πλήθος διανοούμενων και ελεύθερα σκεπτόμενων ανθρώπων, διεθνείς Οργανώσεις και φορείς απ' όλον τον πλανήτη έχουν συνταχθεί στο πλευρό του Ούνγκπακορν, του Νικολαΐδη, που καθημερινά βιώνει έναν εφιάλτη αλυσοδεμένος στις μεσαιωνικές φυλακές της Μπανγκόκ και οποιουδήποτε άλλου υψώνει το ανάστημά του στο απολυταρχικό καθεστώς της Ταϊλάνδης.

Εσείς υπογράψατε για την απελευθέρωση του συμπατριώτη μας, που καταδικάστηκε σαν κοινός εφκληματίας;

Pardon, the last chance


Harry Nicolaides, ex Neos Kosmos English Edition staffer, pleads guilty to lese majeste in the hope of securing Thai royal pardon.

HARRY'S legal team lodged a pardon application last Wednesday with the Thai royal palace. After his conviction on Monday 19 January to six years in prison, that was reduced to three, because he pleaded guilty to a charge of lese majeste (offending the royal family), Harry Nicolaides' last resort to be released is to be granted a royal pardon. In another recent case of a foreign national being charged with lese majeste in Thailand a royal pardon was accorded. In 2007 Swiss national Oliver Jufer was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for defacing with black paint portraits of the Thai King. Eventually he was pardoned and released from jail after four months of incarceration.

However, a Thai expert cautions that a pardon for Harry is not an open and shut case.

Senior Fellow at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University and a close observer of Thai politics, Dr Andrew Walker pointed out to Neos Kosmos English Edition that what has changed in the past 12 months after the case of Oliver Jufer is that the discussion about the role of the monarchy in Thailand has become an even more of a taboo topic.

"This is due to two reasons," explained Dr Walker "the recent political turmoil in Thailand has generated increasing discussion about the role of the palace in that political conflict...this new government in Thailand is a strongly royalist government and they have put the defence of the reputation of the monarch as their absolute number one priority," emphasised Dr Walker. "Of course, a royal pardon is a royal decision, not necessarily a government decision... but these things are linked up and there might be some view in Thailand that they should stick with the sentence [Harry's sentence] and send this message out to the international community," he added.

Dr Walker was also critical of the public line that the Australian government adopted in the case of Harry, distinguishing from the behind the scenes diplomacy and representations that it has undertaken. "This line that was also reaffirmed by recent statements of Foreign Affairs Minister, Stephen Smith is that we need to respect the laws of Thailand and the legal processes and my view is that when it comes to a law which clearly breaches people's basic human rights which is a law about repressing freedom of speech then we don't necessarily have to respect that... we should be speaking out vigorously and condemning it," stressed Dr Walker. He highlighted the fact that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has consistently criticised China for human rights abuses, therefore this case should not be any different.

Indicative of the reluctance shown by the Australian government even to talk about the obscure lese majeste law when asked accordingly by a journalist during a press conference last Monday, Mr Smith replied: "The Australian Government's view on that charge is that it is an offence under Thai law. An Australian citizen who's travelling to Thailand has been charged under that law, and he is subject to the judicial and legal processes of Thailand."

Commenting on the recent developments in the case, Mr Smith revealed to NKEE through a written statement that the Australian government will support Harry's effort to secure a royal pardon. "I raised Mr Nicolaides' case with then Thai Foreign Minister Sompong when we met at APEC in November last year. Now that the legal processes before Thailand's Courts have concluded, Australian officials have advised Thai officials that the Australian Government strongly supports Mr Nicolaides' plea for pardon.

I wrote to Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya outlining the Australian Government's strong support for Mr Nicolaides' pardon application to the King of Thailand." reads the statement.

Given Australia's government public unwillingness to chastise Thailand for it's arbitrary enforcement and prosecution of lese majeste charges, Independent Senator from Adelaide Nick Xenophon voiced his concern to NKEE regarding Harry's case. "Enough is enough... what he's gone through is a great injustice," underscored Mr Xenophon. "The Australian government needs to act decisively. It is time for some straight talk. The Rudd government needs to make it clear to the Thai government that Australia will not accept the incarceration of Harry Nicolaides," he added. The Independent Senator indicated that Harry wrote a fictional book for which he was prosecuted under the lese majeste charge and that this can not "cost a man three years of his life in a Thai prison." The charge relates to a 2005 book that Harry wrote with the title Versimilitude containing a paragraph of no more than 100 words that briefly referred to the Thai royal family. The book was only published in 50 copies with only seven ever being sold.

Federal Labor MP Maria Vamvakinou added her voice of concern for Harry's plight. "I remain very concerned about Harry's predicament. I am certain the past months have been impossible for Harry and his family. I join with many other Australians who would like to see Harry return to his family as soon as possible. I sincerely hope that his plea for a pardon is successful and will do whatever I can to support that process."

Amnesty International Australia was contacted by NKEE regarding Harry's case and issued the following statement: "Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, and Thailand is a party to a key international human rights treaty guaranteeing this right. We are concerned at the three-year sentence that Harry Nicolaides recently received in the Bangkok Criminal Court for this offence. We call on the Australian Government to continue its efforts to secure Mr Nicolaides' release."

Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) vehemently denies any lack of interest in Harry's case. A spokesperson for DFAT reiterated that "Mr Nicolaides is subject to the Thai judicial process, the Government cannot control or intervene in that process, or the judicial process of any other foreign country," said DFAT's spokesperson adding that the Travel Advice for Thailand provides a specific warning to Australians about the penalties that apply under Thai law for insulting the Thai Monarchy. However, DFAT insists that the "Australian Ambassador and his Embassy colleagues have made more than 30 representations to senior Thai authorities on the case including: senior Thai MFA officials on 3 October, 8 October, 8 October, 10 November, 17 December 2008, 12 January and 21 January 2009, Secretary General to the Prime Minister on 27 October 2008

Thai Foreign Minister on 17 November 2008, Director General of the Department of Corrections and the head of DFAT's Consular Division raised the case with the Thai Ambassador on 14 November 2008."

The same spokesperson also stated that the Australian Embassy in Bangkok is providing a high level of consular support to Mr Nicolaides through frequent visits to him in the prison. Australian consular staff are visiting him weekly, compared to monthly visits for long-term Australian prisoners in Thailand and as of 22 January 2009, they have visited him 26 times at the prison, taking up with the Thai authorities any health or welfare concerns Mr Nicolaides raises."

In a two-speed world, in some countries freedom of speech is considered as a crime, separation of Powers is unknown and real distribution of justice seems to remain an unfulfilled dream in the imagination of the bold.

Unfortunately, Harry Nicolaides, a Greek- Cypriot origin Australian journalist, writer and English language instructor, has managed to get himself arrested, by a rigid totalitarian regime, apparently oblivious to the extreme peril he'd placed himself in after the publication of his book “Verisimilitude. Is the truth, the truth?” Nicolaides was arrested in Bangkok airport on 31st August and detained ever since in Bangkok Remand Prison, on a charge of “Lèse Majesté”, pursuant to the Thai Penal Code.

As a matter of fact, the writer is accused of offending the Prince, in his 2005 novel, developing in Thailand, which was printed and published there in seventy copies.

“From King Rama to the Crown Prince, the nobility was renowned for their romantic entanglements and intrigues. The Crown Prince had many wives “major and minor “with a coterie of concubines for entertainment. One of his recent wives was exiled with her entire family, including a son they conceived together, for an undisclosed indiscretion. He subsequently remarried with another woman and fathered another child. It was rumoured that if the prince fell in love with one of his minor wives and she betrayed him, she and her family would disappear with their name, familial lineage and all vestiges of their existence expunged forever.”

As Monarchy is one Thai institution all sides claim to be loyal to above all else, his book is considered to be “a trenchant commentary on the political and social life of contemporary Thailand”. “Verisimilitude” was withdrawn and a warrant was issued last March, of which Harry was completely unaware, until his last visit to Thailand, when he was arrested as he was about to board a flight home to Melbourne.

In the meantime, the writer has been refused four bail applications, for fear of escaping or committing the same “crime” again (!), there is no official charge brought against him yet, while the date of the trial is still unknown.

“Several months may pass till an official charge is brought against him. For the time being, he is suffering under intolerable conditions”, stressed his brother, Fotis, who managed to visit him in Bangkok. Nobody is allowed to see Harry, who, although he is not a drug smuggler or gunrunner, he is locked in the same cell with eighty nine other prisoners, many of them suffering from tuberculosis and staring at him angrily.

“I've been getting icy stares from men covered in tattoos,” he said during his interview to “The Times” of 5/9. “On the first night I would have committed suicide if I'd had the means ... I want to immediately apologize to the Royal Family for my reckless choice of words. I want to write a letter of apology, with the greatest humility.”

In the beginning, the writer was obliged to sleep with a blanket on the floor, then his brother managed, with the help of the Australian Embassy, to provide him with a mattress.

Moreover, in the moving letter, that Nicolaides sent to his elderly parents, he pointed out that his food and water is usually stolen, he suffers from a seizure and fever, he is unable to sleep and added that he’d rather take out his life than staying in prison for fifteen years - a quite possible sentence.

According to “The Wall Street Journal” of 16/10 “Thais deeply revere their 80-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Some see him as almost divine and carry his image in talismans or on car dashboards to bring good luck”. The newspaper article is about several activists being detained in the dungeons of the Asian country recently, under the same charge as Nicolaides.

Nevertheless, Harry will need good and a lot of luck to ever come out of the medieval Thai galleys, which remind us of Turkish jail and bring to mind scenes from “The midnight express”.

Apart from luck, what is really needed is our support, not only from friends and relatives, but from everyone who detests totalitarianism and believes in the application of Human Rights all over the world.

Let us not allow Harry’s fears come true: “If people forget my case, I, myself, will be forgotten in the dungeons of Thailand, as well”.

Εκκληση στο βασιλιά της Ταϊλάνδης να δώσει χάρη στο γιο του και να τον αφήσει ελεύθερο να επιστρέψει σπίτι του έκανε σήμερα ο Σωκράτης Νικολαίδης, πατέρας του ομογενή δημοσιογράφου και συγγραφέα Χάρη Νικολαΐδη, που χθες καταδικάστηκε σε τριετή κάθειρξη για προσβολή της μοναρχίας στην Ταϊλάνδη.

"Ο γιος μου δήλωσε ένοχος και ζήτησε συγγνώμη. Όλοι ζητήσαμε συγγνώμη. Είμαστε διατεθειμένοι ακόμα και γονατιστοί να πάμε ως τον βασιλιά και να ζητήσουμε συγγνώμη για να αφεθεί ελεύθερος ο Χάρης" είπε ο πατέρας του στο ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ και πρόσθεσε:

"Ο βασιλιάς μπορεί να κάνει ένα δώρο στον γιο μου και στην Αυστραλία. Στις 26 Ιανουαρίου,'' Ημέρα της Αυστραλίας'', μπορεί να τον αφήσει ελεύθερο. Θα είναι μια κίνηση που θα εκτιμηθεί από όλο τον αυστραλιανό λαό" είπε.

Ο κ. Σωκράτης Νικολαίδης σημείωσε ότι ήδη ο γιός του έχει τιμωρηθεί υπερβολικά αφού βρίσκεται εδώ και έξι μήνες σε μπουντρούμι της Ταϊλάνδης κάτω από άθλιες συνθήκες.

Η μητέρα του Χάρη Νικολαϊδη δήλωσε ότι λόγοι υγείας δεν της επιτρέπουν να μεταβεί στο Μπάγκογκ για να δει τον γιο της.

Ως γνωστόν το Ποινικό Δικαστήριο της Μπανγκόκ καταδίκασε τον ομογενή αρχικά σε εξαετή κάθειρξη, αλλά μείωσε την ποινή του όταν ο Νικολαΐδης ομολόγησε την ενοχή του. Επί πλέον ο Νικολαΐδης δέχθηκε να υπογράψει συμφωνία με την οποία θα αποδεχόταν τη "μικρή" ποινή του, με αποτέλεσμα τώρα να μην έχει δικαίωμα έφεσης.

Ο Χάρης Νικολαΐδης, που εργαζόταν ως καθηγητής στην Ταϊλάνδη από το 2003 έως το 2005, συνελήφθη την ώρα που εγκατέλειπε τη χώρα τον περασμένο Αύγουστο.

Από το 2006 ζούσε στη Μελβούρνη και δημοσιογραφούσε για την ομογενειακή εφημερίδα "Νέος Κόσμος". Τον περασμένο χρόνο επισκέφθηκε την Ταϊλάνδη, όπου ζει η φίλη του, χωρίς να γνωρίζει ότι είχε εκδοθεί ένταλμα σύλληψης σε βάρος του δύο χρόνια νωρίτερα.

Η κατηγορία εναντίον του βασίζεται σε παράγραφο νουβέλας του, που είχε γράψει το 2005, με τίτλο "Αληθοφάνεια", και αναφερόταν σε ανώνυμο Ταϊλανδό εστεμμένο πρίγκιπα και τη σκανδαλώδη ζωή του. Το βιβλίο τυπώθηκε μόνο σε 50 αντίτυπα και πουλήθηκαν λιγότερα από δέκα.

Ο Νικολαΐδης, με δάκρυα στα μάτια, αλυσοδεμένος χειροπόδαρα δήλωσε στους δημοσιογράφους ότι αισθάνεται πως "όλο αυτό είναι ένα κακό όνειρο είναι μια δοκιμασία, είναι σαν εφιάλτης".

Η καταδίκη του και, κυρίως ο τρόπος που εμφανίστηκε στο δικαστήριο (με μια πορτοκαλί φόρμα και με αλυσίδες σε χέρια και πόδια) έκανε τον γύρο του κόσμου και αποτελεί κύριο θέμα στα αυστραλιανά μέσα ενημέρωσης.

Διατυπώνονται δε επικρίσεις για την "αδιαφορία" και την "χλιαρή" αντίδραση της αυστραλιανής κυβέρνησης, δεδομένου ότι ο Νικολαϊδης είναι Αυστραλός πολίτης.

THE Doncaster parents of writer Harry Nicolaides have spoken of their shock after he was jailed last night for offending the Thai monarchy.

They told the Manningham Leader this morning they were "devastated".

Nicolaides has been sentenced to three years in a Thai jail for offending the country’s royal family.

The 41-year-old has been languishing in a Thai prison since August 31, when he was charged with lese-majesty - defamation of the Thai monarchy.

Nicolaides, a Chiang Mai-based university lecturer and freelance writer, was charged in relation to a paragraph in his 226-page fictional book, Verisimilitude, which referred to the personal life of an unnamed member of the Thai royal family and was deemed offensive.

The former East Doncaster High School student pleaded guilty to the charge at a Bangkok court hearing yesterday.

The judges sentenced Nicolaides to six years in prison, reduced to three because he pleaded guilty.

Nicolaides’s desperate family – elderly parents Despina and Socrates and brother Forde - are considering applying for a royal pardon.

Mrs Nicolaides has previously told the Manningham Leader about the squalid prison conditions her son describes in letters home.

Among the worst stories was how he watched his cell mate die after his calls for medical help were ignored.

The man’s body was not removed until the next morning.

Mrs Nicolaides said her son told of the constant stench of sewage from the communal toilet and daily fights between the 95 inmates who were "crammed’’ into one cell.

Σε αναλύσεις του ο αυστραλιανός τύπος εκτιμά ότι ο 44χρονος Αμπχισίτ Βεζτζαζίβα, που εξελέγη και επισήμως ως ο 27ος πρωθυπουργός της Ταϊλάνδης, έπειτα από την ψηφοφορία στη σύνοδο της Κάτω Βουλής, πρόσκειται φανατικά στη μοναρχία.

Στις αναλύσεις υποστηρίζεται, όμως, ότι κάποιοι υποστηρικτές της μοναρχίας της κάνουν ζημιές μιας και εμφανίζονται ως "βασιλικότεροι του βασιλέως".

Ως χαρακτηριστική περίπτωση αναφέρεται η συνεχιζόμενη φυλάκιση του ομογενούς Χάρη Νικολαΐδη.

Όπως επισημαίνεται στα δημοσιεύματα, ο 41χρονος Χάρης Νικολαΐδης, εκπαιδευτικός και δημοσιογράφος της ομογενειακής εφημερίδας "Νέος Κόσμος", βρίσκεται σε φυλακή της Ταϊλάνδης από τις 31 Αυγούστου με την κατηγορία της προσβολής της μοναρχίας, κατηγορία που μπορεί να επιφέρει φυλάκιση ως 15 έτη.

Για "εγκληματική αδιαφορία" σε βάρος ομογενή κατηγορείται η αυστραλιανή κυβέρνηση.

Η οικογένεια του ομογενούς συγγραφέα, Χάρη Νικολαΐδη, που παραμένει κρατούμενος σε φυλακή της Ταϊλάνδης, υποστηρίζει ότι η ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση δεν έχει ενεργήσει αρκετά, για να διασφαλίσει την απελευθέρωσή του.

Ο δικηγόρος του ομογενή, κ. Ντιν, υποστηρίζει ότι η αυστραλιανή κυβέρνηση "θυσιάζει τα ανθρώπινα συμφέροντα του Νικολαΐδη για να μην διαταράξει τις σχέσεις της με την Ταϊλάνδη".

Ο 41 ετών Νικολαΐδης, από τη Μελβούρνη, κατηγορείται από τις αρχές της Ταϊλάνδης, ότι προσέβαλε την βασιλική οικογένεια της χώρας. Συνελήφθη και παραμένει φυλακισμένος για πάνω από τρεις μήνες τώρα.

Αν κριθεί ένοχος, κινδυνεύει με ποινή φυλάκισης έως και 15 ετών.

Η οικογένεια, με δηλώσεις της μητέρας του Δέσποινας, απηύθυνε έκκληση στις αυστραλιανές αρχές, ειδικά στο υπουργείο Εξωτερικών να εντατικοποιήσουν τις προσπάθειές τους για την αποφυλάκιση του Νικολαΐδη.

Έκκληση για την απελευθέρωση του ομογενούς, απηύθυνε και η οργάνωση "Δημοσιογράφοι Χωρίς Σύνορα".

"Κρατείται σε πολύ σκληρές συνθήκες και το ηθικό του είναι πεσμένο. Καλούμε τις αυστραλιανές αρχές να κάνουν ότι περνά από το χέρι τους για να επαναπατριστεί ο Νικολαΐδης", αναφέρει η ανακοίνωση της οργάνωσης.

"Η περίπτωση του Χάρη πάει από το κακό στο χειρότερο", δήλωσε στο "Νέο Κόσμο" ο αδελφός του ομογενή Χάρη Νικολαΐδη, που τελεί υπό κράτηση σε φυλακές της Μπανγκόκ, κατηγορούμενος ότι πρόσβαλε τη βασιλική οικογένεια της χώρας.

Ο Φώτης Νικολαϊδης δήλωσε ότι ο αδελφός του, Χάρης, οδηγήθηκε την Παρασκευή στο Κακουργιοδικείο της Μπανγκόκ όπου του απαγγέλθηκε επίσημα η κατηγορία Lese Majeste για προσβολή της μοναρχίας.

"Αυτό σημαίνει ότι θα παραμείνει στη φυλακή έως ότου γίνει η δίκη του. Ημερομηνία δεν έχει καθοριστεί και είναι βέβαιο ότι η δίκη θα γίνει του χρόνου".

Ο Νικολαΐδης ισχυρίστηκε ότι είναι αθώος και δεν είχε καμιά πρόθεση να θίξει την βασιλική οικογένεια με το βιβλίο "Verisimilitude", που έγραψε πριν τρία χρόνια.

Σύμφωνα με τον Φώτη Νικολαΐδη, επιβάλλεται να πιεστεί η αυστραλιανή κυβέρνηση για να απελευθερωθεί ο αδελφός του, ο οποίος είναι "πολιτικός κρατούμενος".

Με το θέμα Νικολαΐδη ασχολείται με ολοσέλιδο δημοσίευμά της και η έγκυρη εφημερίδα "The Age", που κάνει λόγο για "μια απίστευτη, τρελή ιστορία που δεν έχει ίχνος λογικής και δεν ξέρει κανείς πώς θα τελειώσει".

Ως γνωστόν, ο Νικολαΐδης, κάτοικος Μελβούρνης, συνελήφθη τον περασμένο Αύγουστο στη Μπανγκόκ και προφυλακίστηκε. Νωρίτερα, χωρίς ο ίδιος να το γνωρίζει, είχε εκδοθεί ένταλμα σύλληψης σε βάρος του γιατί σε βιβλίο που έγραψε κρίθηκε ότι προσέβαλλε την βασιλική οικογένεια της χώρας.

Έκτοτε, παρά τις κινητοποιήσεις, ο Νικολαΐδης βρίσκεται έγκλειστος σε ένα μπουντρούμι της Μπανγκόκ.

Ο ίδιος ζήτησε επίσημα συγγνώμη από την βασιλική οικογένεια, χωρίς αποτέλεσμα, ενώ και οι τρεις αιτήσεις του για αποφυλάκιση απορρίφθηκαν.
